A number of St Helens Sutton A.C. members represented St Helens in the Merseyside County Schools Cross Country held at Liverpool’s Sefton Park.

The conditions were very cold whilst the ground was soft and muddy underfoot. Firstly, representing the primary school boys was Charlie Roberts who finished 4th in 6 min.26 secs. swiftly followed by Michael Brussels who ran the 1.5km course in 7 min.95 secs. for 15th.

The St Helens team finished 3rd place overall.

Secondly was the primary school girls over the same course. Ellie Doyle led the team home in 9th position in a quick time of 7 min.46 secs., followed by Elizabeth Greenall, 13th in 8 min.02 sec., Amber Escoffery 19th in 8 min.24 secs, closely followed by Imogen Harwood Moss, 20th in 8 min.25 secs. and Hollie Brussels ran 8 min.45 secs. for 24th position.

The town finished two teams in 3rd and 7th positions..

Next was the Year 7 girls’ team. They covered the distance of 2km and the team consisted of Imogen King who finished in 12th position in 8 min.21 secs. and she has been selected to compete for Merseyside in the inter-county schools cross country championships.

Also running were Bethany Haughey, 28th in 8 min.54 secs with Lucy Price finishing 29th in 8 min.58 secs. and Elizabeth Griffiths 30th in 9 min.00 secs. The girls packed well as a team and finished 4th.

The Year 7 boys' team included Joe Houghton who ran very well to finish 7th with a time for the 2.5km course of 10 min.52 secs.. Joe was also selected to compete in the inter-county schools event. An excellent achievement. The Year 8 and 9 boys were next.

The St Helens team included: Sam Thomson who covered the 3.5km course in 29th place in 14 min.37 secs., shortly followed by Anthony Walker who finished 43rd in 16 min.07 secs and Joseph Woods, 45th in 16 min.53 secs. The team was 5th.

Samantha Price ran for the Year 8 and 9 girls over a 3km course finishing in 26th place in a time of 13 min.37 secs. Chloe Orrick ran well for 29th in 13 min.54 secs.,. Emily Ashton was 32nd in a time of 14 min.08 secs., Kanyarat Avison wa 37th in 14 min.21 secs., Rosie Dwyer 40th place in 15 min.25 secs. and Natalie Tate 41st in 15 min.41 secs.. The team finished 5th overall.

Next was the Year 10 and 11 boys 6km race in which Adam Woosey finished in 14th place in a time of 22 min.30 secs.. In the Year 10 and 11 girls was Maddie Williams who ran strongly to finish 11th in 16 min.23 secs.

Also in the same race was Maria McGoldrick who represented the Year 12 and 13 girls, she covered the 4km course in 5th place in a time of 15 min.29 secs.

She will be competing in the English Schools on 15th March 2014 representing Merseyside at Leicestershire. The St Helens team finished 2nd overall.

Both the club’s Under 15year's Teams took part in the North West League Finals at Widnes and both teams achieved the club’s best results for quite a few years with the Girls coming 3rd in a closely fought competition and the Boys being crowned Champions! The teams won 16 individual medals in a range of events. The boys team was Matthew Lamb, Christopher Lamb, Daniel Lamb, George Assan, David Barrow, Lewis Cowan and Jacob Beesley. For the girls it was Megan Lang, Erin Makin, Hannah Seabrook, Olivia Harwood-Moss, Emily Smith, Zoe Pye and Caitlin Young.

Matthew Lamb who once again achieved a clean sweep with 3 individual Gold Medals in the 2 Lap, Speed Bounce and Long Jump. His Speed Bounce total being just 4 jumps under the national record which has stood for some time and came just minutes after he had raced in a hard 2 lap final. showing how well he is developing as multi-eventer. The athletes will now be hoping for County Selection for the Regional County Finals on 15th March in Manchester.
