St Helens Star: BBC to cover Recs' clash against Aberdeen BBC to cover Recs' clash against Aberdeen

THE BBC cameras will roll into town on Saturday for the intriguing Challenge Cup first round tie between Pilkington Recs and Aberdeen Warriors.

The Super League Show is introducing a ‘Road to Wembley’ feature this season which will film a game from every round of the competition.

Producers picked the Ruskin Drive fixture – which pits one of the most famous amateur teams in the game against the Scottish champions – as the round’s plum tie.

Camera crews will be interviewing players, officials and supporters both before and after the game.

The red, amber and blacks are hoping to draw a large crowd and Billy Dillon, their long standing club secretary, described the television coverage as “fantastic news, which adds another incentive to be at our best”.

He later joked: “I'm expecting Boots will see a surge in hair gel and fake tan sales that week, but our lads won't get too distracted and will approach the game in the same way as always.”

Aberdeen will be an unknown quantity for Recs, who earned promotion from National Conference League Division Three at the first time of asking last year.

They will also have to do without one of their leading lights after Barla half back Ryan Rogers agreed a deal to play Australian semi-pro leagues.

Rogers, a Recs player since the age of six, is joining Nyngan Tigers, New South Wales, who compete in the NSW Group 11 competition.

It will put extra responsibility on the shoulders of the diminutive scrum half Danny Lynch, who toured Australia with BARLA alongside Rogers last autumn.

Lynch enjoyed a fine 2013 and was named the BARLA under 23s international player of the year.

The tie will kick off at 2pm on Saturday, February 1. Spectators are asked to make a £1 donation and will receive a match programme.

Elsewhere in the cup, Blackbrook are at home to Egremont Ragers while Thatto Heath travel to Shaw Cross.
