MARTIN Murray’s clash against Australian fighter Jarrod Fletcher in Monte Carlo will not now be for the world middleweight title.

The World Boxing Association has, for the time being, denied current champion Gennady Golovkin’s move up to a ‘super’ classification meaning that the regular belt is no longer vacant.

Although the politics will be disappointing for Murray – the latest of a long list of let-downs not of his own making – he will not be sidetracked from his training camp for that February 1 bout.

In the early hours of Christmas morning he tweeted: “Run & training finished for today. Looking forward to a nice day with the family then back to work tomorrow #Dedication=success.”

He knows his Australian opponent will have had this fight in his sights for a while, and Murray is not taking the defence of his interim belt for granted.

He is, however, still looking ahead to big fights against the holders of the other belts.

Murray said: “I would like to avenge the draw (Sturm) and loss (Martinez) against my name.

“I have got to be honest with you I don’t think the Martinez fight is ever going to happen again. He has made it very obvious since last April because he has not even entertained my name.

“But now that Sturm has won the IBF title, if I win on February 1, given I got a draw last time I fought in Germany, I believe there is unfinished business.

“A fight between me and Sturm does make sense and that is definitely a wrong I would like to put right. Hopefully if all goes well on February 1 I can then look at those type of fights.

“I don’t know what Sturm is doing now and what he is thinking about next. He said in his post fight interview that I am someone he is thinking about – and he thinks along the same lines as me – that there is a blemish on his record that he would like to put right.

“That is a fight I’d like to be involved in but first and foremost I have to get past Jarrod Fletcher in February.”

It is never that clear-cut – and even though there are WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO titles to fight for – there are always promoters and television companies pushing for a different pairing.

But Hatton Promotions are optimistic that those big fights will fall into place – particularly against Sturm.

Richard Poxon, Hatton Promotions' director of boxing, said: “Sturm is tied into a re-match clause with Darren Barker but until he decides what he wants to do after his hip operation Sturm can’t do anything.

“Martinez is unlikely given they are looking at Miguel Cotto in 2014 so that is that tied up.

“Domestically we don’t know what Barker is going to do, Macklin is doing his own thing in America at the moment which presents a problem for us.

“There are big, big fights out there but sometimes you have to wait for the sand to settle to see where everything falls.

“But I am sure if Sturm and Barker don’t exercise a rematch clause I am sure that is a fight we will be looking at.”
