On a typical winters day at Red Rocks, West Park made light of the conditions and produced a comprehensive and very satisfying display of running rugby, scoring eight tries to register their highest score of the season to date.

With the game barely five minutes old, winger Chris Fortune fielded a high kick and expertly fed full back Matt Savage who crossed in the corner for the first of what was to prove his hat trick of tries.

Within a few minutes however the visitors struck back as their scrum half picked up the ball from a set scrum and outwitted the defence to score a try which was converted, although their lead was not to last long.

Quick thinking by skipper Rob Morley saw him take a quick tap penalty and with an outrageous dummy crossed for a try which Warren Hunt hitting the upright failed to convert.

A purple patch by the home side’s pack, in which front row debutant Martin Kimberly played his part, saw hooker Andrew Sterry take a couple to strikes against the head, and from one of these the ball was quickly passed through the hands of Karl Miller, Liam Hill and Matt Savage to find winger Chris Fortune who gathered his own kick ahead to score a memorable try which Hunt converted.

Flanker Miller was having a fine game in both attack and defence, and picking up a ball from the base of the scrum he scythed though the visitors defence to score an excellent try which Hunt converted As half time approached, the visitors again got on the score sheet, the scrum half repeating his earlier move from the base of the scrum to score a fine solo try which was converted, leaving the score at 24 pts to 14 pts at the break.

Playing into a strong wind in the second half, West Park continued to throw the ball around, occasionally somewhat irresponsibly, but nonetheless this adventurous approach paid off as good inter-passing amongst the backs allowed Savage space to cross for his second try which Hunt converted.

Running the ball at every opportunity the home side went further ahead after a brilliant break by centre John James, was carried on by hooker Sterry whose neat pass to Savage allowed the full back to register his third try, which Hunt was unlucky not to convert as the strengthening wind blew the ball back as it was about to cross the bar.

Winnington Park kept in the game winning a set scrum after an unfortunate knock on by Park’s full back, and their flanker crossed for a try which was however not converted.

Although leading 34pts to 19pts and maximum league points in the bag, the home side kept up the momentum with first fly half Liam Hill scoring a try followed by another as man of the match centre Danny Green fed winger Warren Hunt who finished at pace , going on to convert both tries.

To their credit, and although well beaten , the visitors had the satisfaction of scoring the final try which was converted to give them an unlikely bonus point.

There are no games over the holiday period, fixtures resuming on Sat 4th Jan 2014 when West Park entertain Anselmians at Red Rocks, kick off 2.15pm.
