THERE will be no shortage of power and size in the Saints front row next year, with three new recruits meaning that there will be plenty of competition for spots.

It has been an area where the team has been deficient in recent years – with the hole that should have been filled by disappointing former Australian test prop Josh Perry being a real problem in the past three seasons.

The big games lost have invariably been down to Saints’ front row getting blown away by bigger, more abrasive packs in the opening stages.

It is an area – along with a go-to half back – that has been amended ahead of 2014.

Saints have props for starting and impact; for graft and strong-running with the club ticking a few boxes on the entertainment and menace front by luring in Mose Masoe.

But the club looked to have pulled off a real coup in snaring a genuine hard-nosed starting prop in enticing Kyle Amor from Wakefield.

But with plenty of big lads jostling for spots, Amor is taking nothing for granted in his new surroundings.

Amor said: “It is great having loads of competition with nine front rowers, so it is not going to be an easy feat playing every week which is good. That is the environment you want to be in.

“There are a lot of good young kids there – I have already noticed that in training. Richard Beaumont, who has come over from Hull KR, is a big lad too.”

Although the current coaching orthodox is to start with three props, with a big man taking the old loose forward spot, and have those spelled by two off the bench - that will still see someone missing out.

Aside from the new boys, Saints still have Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, who finished last term strongly, Anthony Laffranchi, and the rapidly improving giant Alex Walmsley.

Throw in Paul Clough and youngsters Anthony Walker and Greg Richards and there will be genuine competition for jerseys.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to start.

“As long as I am playing and contributing I will do what they want me to do, but to be named in that starting front row is what I want to try to do but that will be detailed by Nathan Brown and what we do in training. I will try and give a good account of myself,” he said.
