Warrington Wolves' Simon Grix sits out the World Cup
1:28pm Monday 21st October 2013 in Sport
IRELAND have confirmed Simon Grix will not be competing in the Rugby League World Cup.
No explanation has been given by the Irish for his withdrawal, but the Warrington Wolves pack star revealed last month that he had been carrying injuries. He is expected to require surgery on an albow.
Ireland head coach Mark Aston has called upon Belfast born Matty Hadden to join the Ireland squad as his replacement.
The Oxford prop made his debut under Aston in last season’s victory over Scotland and picked up a second cap against England Knights in his home town.
Following a successful first season in Championship One, Hadden had just missed out on the 24-man squad when it was named a few weeks ago.
Aston has high praise for the former Antrim Eels man.
“He’s a top young man who has certainly progressed over the last 12 months,” he said.
“He works hard and is an uncompromising sort of prop forward and I’m sure for his personal development this will be massive for him.”
Ireland’s opening World Cup game is against Fiji in Rochdale on Monday.
