West Park 1st XV 50 Manchester 1st XV 29
10:00pm Sunday 6th October 2013 in Sport
Having scored 37 pts last week against Anselmians and this week racking up another impressive 50 pts haul, there is obviously no shortage of attacking ability in this young West Park side. However, although both games were won, conceding a total of 64 pts in these two fixtures suggests there are still some frailties in either concentration, decision making or tackling techniques to be addressed.
Both teams and spectators observed a minutes silence before the game in remembrance of John Woods, a former President and long- serving member of West Park who recently passed away Within minutes of the game starting Park scored the first of what was to eventually become an 8 try bonanza, with centre John James finishing off a fine piece of inter-passing between Chris Fortune, Matt Savage and winger Tom Dempsey . Similar interplay amongst several players soon yielded another try as prop forward Danny McGarvey bludgeoned his way over the line from 10 metres out , with Savage adding the conversion.
Two further tries followed as the home side threw the ball about with gay abandon, first Lewis Whitty and then Liam Hill finished off excellent passing moves with Savage converting the former try.
Manchester had little answer to this fast flowing play, and relied on keeping the ball within the forwards where possible, and eventually they got on the score sheet with a close range try from a messy rolling maul.
West Park however continued to play an exciting and expansive game which brought them two further tries before the interval. Chris Fortune covered half the length of the field to score a fine individual effort, then winger Oliver Berry left several opponents in his wake as he touched down wide out.
Savage converted both tries to reach half time with a fully justified lead of 38 pts to 5 pts.
Strangely West Park appeared to ease back in the second half and allowed the visitors back into the game, affording them three unexpected tries without reply, giving them a more respectable score line of 38 pts to 22 pts and some much needed self belief.
Eventually the home side got back into running mode, and another fine break by fly half Savage found back row Chris Fortune in support who crossed for his second try after an outrageous dummy to fool the opposing full back.
Manchester to their credit continued to use their apparent forward superiority and scored a further try from close range, only to prompt yet another attack from the home side, Liam Hill adding his second try after good approach work from full back Green and fly half Savage, the latter recording his fifth conversion of the eight tries scored .
