Haydock 26 Simms Cross 36
12:08pm Thursday 26th September 2013 in Sport
HAYDOCK played their last match of the season, and despite missing about eight players in a very important Cup game, the lads who came in did the club proud.
Haydock was on the back foot from the start with Simmies putting on the early pressure, and they swung the ball out and centre Bren Kavanagh forced his way.
Deon Cross replied, Dean Dollin with the extras but centre Kavanagh with his second touchdowns edged Halton back in front, McWhirter goaling. Dollin responded with a try on 21 minutes to make it 12-10.
Three touchdowns in seven minutes in the run up to the break effectively won the game for Simmies, Sean McDermott claimed two in quick succession and Matty Reid the other, McWhirter landing the conversions to all of them.
Danny Gee and Dave Frodsham hit back for Haydock by the 50th minute, Karl Dingsdale converting the latter.
McWhirter landed a penalty just before the hour to extend the margin to 12 points, Danny Price then crashing over for Halton to secure victory.
Haydock posted the final points when Jordan Gibson went over, Dingsdale goaling.
But it was a tremendous effort by the Yickers. The St Helens Windows Man of Match went to Danny Gee with good displays from Chris Smith, Rob Sexton, Mike Sexton and Jordan Gibson.
