Underbank Rangers 20 Blackbrook 12
11:52am Friday 23rd August 2013 in Sport
BLACKBROOK’S National Conference League Division Three promotion push was dealt a blow in Holmfirth as Underbank Rangers hung on to claim two vital points.
Stephen Marsh gave the visitors a deserved lead, but Dave Valentine’s double and Will Midgley’s try meant Mark Leonard’s late score was only a consolation.
Danny Fairhurst found Marsh from a penalty 16 minutes in and he stormed to the side of the posts to leave Lee Marsh an easy conversion.
With four minutes of the half remaining Brook were given a penalty and seemed ready to mount an assault on the Underbank line.
But a dropped ball was picked up by Neil Barrett, who charged down field to send Valentine over from close range – Barrett converting to level at the break.
The hosts took the lead for the first time after the interval, Sam Hendrick joining the line to set up an overlap for Midgley to score, Barrett adding the extras.
Barrett added another superbly kicked goal from 45 metres after Brook were caught holding down at the ruck, leaving the visitors needing to score twice to win the game.
With two minutes remaining Leonard collected Marsh’s high kick and the centre beat his marker to score in the corner, Marsh adding the conversion.
But from the re-start Valentine scooped his second try and Barrett was again on hand to convert.
