Kells 42 Pilkington Recs 8
2:15pm Thursday 8th August 2013 in Sport
RECS’ chances of taking the NCL Division Three crown were dealt a blow after a comprehensive defeat by second placed Kells.
Victory in Whitehaven would have put the league leaders on course for the title - but they produced a desperately disappointing performance and were overrun in the second half by the excellent Cumbrians.
The first half was competitive and had Recs showed more composure in attack, or benefited from the bounce of the ball on a couple of occasions, the half time scoreline of 18-4 would have been tighter.
Barry Boyd and Luke Scott had ran in tries to leave Recs trailing 12-0 by the time skipper Mark Ashton raced on to Greg Smith's offload and touched down.
And just as it appeared the balance of the game was evening up Kells’ Gary Johnstone struck in first half stoppage time on the back of a mighty 40/20 kick downfield.
Recs' defence buckled in the second half and with Kells ruthlessly seizing upon errors to run in tries through Johnstone, Tyrone Dalton (two) and Ross Gainford.
Jon Ford managed a reply for Recs but they were well beaten.
Recs still have a four point lead at the top of the table, however, Kells have two games in hand and a vastly superior points difference.
Liam Bostock was Recs’ Amdec man of the match.
