Haydock who had two hard matches last season against also newly promoted rivals Shevington where once again involved in a very hard game. Shevington started the stronger and enjoyed much of the early possession, and Haydock's defence had to be strong. Haydock rarely got out of their half in the first 15mins, and after countless pressure and 4 sets on the Haydock line the pressure eventually told and the ball was swung out left and saw their winger go in for the opening try, after 18mins.
to put Shevington in front by 4 - 0 .Haydock did repond with good runs from Karl Dingsdale and Dean Dollin and moved quickly into Shevington 22mtr area, Haydock where puttig the pressure on Wayne Dollin going close, but it was brother Mike Sexton from acting half back who gave it to younger brother Rob who dummied and darted over for the Yickers first try converted by Dean Dollin which put Haydock leading 6 - 4 after 27mins. Haydock who had their tails up came straight back, good runs from Danny Gee, Scott Johnson and Daryl Rotherham put them on the attack again and a peach of a pass from Jordan Gibson to centre Josh Jackson aho collected it and sped in from 20mtrs to score a good try, converted by Karl Dingsdale to put Haydock in command at 12 - 4 after 32mins. But Shevington came back and only good tackling kept them at bay, they went over the line only to be held up. And Haydock went at H-T with a 12 - 4 advantage.
Shevington started the 2nd half like the first and where soon putting pressure on the Haydock line, and from 5mtrs out a short pass to the big prop forward who went in under the posts to score and was duly converted to make it 12 - 10 to Haydock after 45mins. Haydock's defence was proving to a match winner, and once again Shevington where held up over the line. With Shevington on the attack again, passing the ball along the line and Daryl Rotherham intercepted a pass went 20mtrs before passing the ball the winger Karl Dingsdale who left everybody behind him and went 50mtrs to score, converted it himself to put Haydock 18 - 10 in front after 52mins. Both teams where giving their all, and once again the Haydock lads where tackling well, good run from Carl Cheetham put Haydock where they wanted to be, Dean Dollin who was tripped and a penalty was awarded Dean Dollin converted the penalty to put Haydock 20 - 10 in front after 61mins. Shevington still not giving up had plenty of the ball, but the defence kept them out and once again they where held up over the line, But back came the Yick good running from Danny Gee, Dean Dollin and Wayne Dollin put them on the Shevington line and a neat little kick from Mike Sexton saw winger Steve Jones go in for a good try to put Haydock 24 - 10 ahead after 74mins. But credit to Shevington never gave in and on the death their other prop went in for a converted try on 79mins to give the final score a 24 - 16 win to Haydock The St.Helens Windows Man of the Match went to Dean Dollin with good displays from Rob Sexton, Wayne Dollin and Karl Dingsdale.
