GIANT forward Alex Walmsley has made an immediate impression on his new teammates at Saints - and given the opposition something to think about too.

The 6ft5 front rower, who has joined Saints on a three year deal from Batley, has produced two energetic performances in games against Huddersfield and Wakefield.

With Paul Clough temporarily sidelined through injury, the long striding Tyke has lost no time in pressing a claim for an early bench spot.

Experienced teammate Jon Wilkin has been impressed with what he has seen of the 21-year-old so far.

He said: “Alex is freakishly big and there was genuine fear in opponents’ eyes when he played the other night and that is one of the few times I have seen that for a number of years.

“If you look at Alex it tells you why we need to look at the Championship.

“All good sports organisations need to source the best players, no matter where they are from.

“St Helens has some great rugby clubs and amateur clubs – drawing the talent out of those has to be the priority.

“But it is a timely reminder not to forget about the wider world.”
