6:16pm Thursday 2nd August 2012 in Olympics in St Helens
Ed Clancy leads the team pursuit cyclists to a new world record in qualifying.
NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS-based cyclist Ed Clancy was part of the Great Britain quartet who smashed their own team pursuit world record in qualifying at the Olympics tonight.
Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Geraint Thomas (who also lived in Newton before moving to Manchester) and Peter Kennaugh clocked 3 mins 52.499 secs over 4,000 metres in the session at London 2012 Olympic Velodrome.
Great Britain's team pursuit squad set a cycling world record in qualifying on a night of high drama at the London 2012 Olympic Velodrome.
The British quartet previously set the world record in winning April's Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne.
But here they went 0.796 seconds faster on the opening day of action on the track, which has produced high drama, to lay down the gauntlet to their rivals.
