HE may be used to lifting silverware as Saints former captain but Paul Sculthorpe added another winner’s trophy to his collection when he was crowned ping pong champion.
Andy Reid was the brainchild of the tournament which was held at his Cinema Bar on Duke Street, raising around £850 for the Steve Prescott Foundation (SPF).
Steve’s eldest son Taylor, cheered on by his mum Linzi and brother Koby, also proved a dab hand with the ping pong bat, defeating council leader Barrie Grunewald who also took part along with former mayor Andy Bowden.
Scully and Johnny battled it out in a tense match which saw the former Saints skipper battle back from 18-12 down to defeat Vegas 21-18.
Martin Blondel general manager of the SPF joked: “I think stamina came into play and Scully’s sporting fitness was the order of the day.
“A total of 32 people entered the competition. Barrie Grunewald was beaten by Taylor Prescott in the quarter final but Taylor was beaten by a young lad named Adam Conway.
“It was a fantastic event with a great family atmosphere. A lot of people brought their children and Johnny was absolutely hilarious.
“You can put a lot of effort into raising money but it’s not always about raising money. This had a great community feel.
“And fair play to Andy Reid for coming up with this. We had talked about it but I never thought it would come off.
“And it was a weekend which saw Johnny on Benidorm and Jonathan Ross and he wore one of our shirts on 8 out of 10 cats.”
