PRIMARY school children watched the birdie and picked up a £300 prize for their green idea.
Pupils from Legh Vale Primary School in Haydock entered a prize draw at St Helens Council’s ‘Green School Surgery – a prescription for the environment’ event at Hope Academy in Newton-le-Willows.
The youngsters came up with the suggestion to install cameras in bird boxes in their newly-created Jubilee Garden.
Dozens of schools from across Merseyside took part in the event, which included a tour of the state-of-the-art eco-college.
Hope Academy students get the full benefits of green power as wind turbines provide off peak electricity, with heating and hot water supplied by renewable biomass sources on site.
The study of sustainable development is part of the school’s specialism.
The surgery was sponsored and supported by St Helens Council, The Co-operative Community Members Group and Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority.
