CHILDREN will be urged to increase their reading as National Libraries Day is celebrated this weekend – and down at Ashurst Primary they have already got started.

The school has unveiled a new library crammed full of books requested by the pupils themselves, as well as a range of more traditional children’s literature.

A new computer-based system allows the children to scan their books in and out, helping to develop their independence. It also means teachers can maintain a log of pupils’ reading habits.

Councillor Sue Murphy officially opened the library at the school in New Glade Hill, Blackbrook.

She said: “Reading is more than a skill. It nourishes creativity and I’m delighted that Ashurst Primary is providing the opportunity for this for the benefit of its pupils.”

At the opening, children were given the chance to dress up as their favourite literary characters with figures such as Harry Potter, Batman and Mary Poppins making an appearance.

Pamela Potter, executive headteacher, who dressed as Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series for the occasion, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to provide this resource.”
