TOWNSFOLK watched in horror as three drunken men with Eastern European accents insulted the honour of the town's dead heroes by urinating on our war memorial.

Karen Hill and husband Steven, a former Royal Marine, were strolling across Victoria Square with their six year old daughter Chloe, when they spotted the intoxicated trio lurking near the memorial at around 3.30pm on Monday.

A disgusted Karen (34) said: "If Steven had been on his own, he would have said something, but think what happened to Garry Newlove.

"Our neighbours told the men it was like urinating on someone's grave, but they didn't give a monkey's."

Steven (37), who served in the Marines for seven years and has had family members in the armed forces for generations, said: "We brought Chloe down to the square twice on Remembrance Sunday to explain what it was all about and the sacrifice the soldiers made for their country. But for someone to do that is disgraceful.

"It doesn't matter what country they are from, you should never do that. This was in broad daylight!"

Pointing to Century House and the Town Hall, he said: "The police must be able to get CCTV pictures."

The family, who live in St Helens town centre rang police and described the men as in their 20s and wearing work clothes.

Clutching mobile phones, the men staggered to a bench near the town hall, before heading towards the bus station.

Officers attended the scene but the men had left. Police could not confirm whether CCTV footage from cameras pointing at Victoria Square was available.

This shocking news comes after an appalled Star reader saw another drunken man urinating into the canal in full view of children close to Tesco on Chalon Way earlier on Monday.
