  • "BILL,we have this discussion on a regular basis,IF cllr RIMMER and her band of merry men actually came out in public and told us why this town does not attract the investment that neighbouring town get we would all be in the picture. Why has ST THOMAS'S SQ site never been built on,why have we still got an old shopping centre, there are a long list of things wrong with this town and nothing has been done for years to stop a lot of the rot,i know we go on about other towns and the money that was spent on them when LABOUR ruled for 14 years, but the plain facts are this town did not get the same investment or if it did the money was mismanaged, you have said CLLR RIMMER works hard and is a personal friend of yours,i also know high up officials of the LABOUR PARTY who don't think her throw back to the 1970's style of rhetoric helps this town and has been accused of being unbending or refusing to move with the times, how bad does it look when another leading labour member publicly states she is a luddite and narrow minded, and this gets printed in the national press, does that instill any investor to even think about coming to this town knowing what they are dealing with. Here are a few small ideas that could help this town that she will never implement, free parking all day, half price rents for new business coming to town, reduced council tax for market stall holders, integrate some services with neighbouring towns, reduce the levels of management in the council, stop the duplication of depts.and the jobs they do,just do what they are supposed to do and leave other things alone, remember it is our money they spend and sometimes it seems they give us what they think we want rather than what we need."

Can we trust Labour with fiscal policy for the town?

Is there no penalty when politicians publish dubious information to tempt or frighten sections of the electorate into voting for them?

I cite the recent ‘Labour literature’ which states that a family earning £20,000 per annum loses £450 per annum because of the 2.5 per cent increase in VAT.

Simple mental arithmetic shows that they would have to spend £18,450 on 20 per cent VAT items, leaving only £1,550, which would just cover electric and gas, with nothing left to spend on food, rates, etc.

Can we really trust people with such arithmetical ability to run a tight fiscal policy for our town?
