IN response to stories about council cuts.
You can take your pick from articles in The Guardian/Financial Times (£18bn austerity cuts and impact on local authority spending) / or academic studies explaining why councils are being squeezed to cut services, sell off assets and raise council tax etc.
Local authorities and especially those in socially deprived areas are being required to provide more and more services on an ever reducing budget.
Central government funds the vast majority of LA spending (councils have very limited powers to raise revenue independent of central government funding).
The welfare state is being dismantled by stealth. It’s all down to the maths.
The government avoids scrutiny by focusing all the attention on ‘the councillors’.
Do people really believe that councils on an ever reducing budget can maintain services? It just can’t be done.
