I RECEIVED an email message headed: “Turn your trash into treasure”

I thought such a message must have originated from the United States of America and was about to delete it, when I saw the message came from St Helens Council Recycling Rewards.

I opened it, and on the advice section of how to visit a recycling centre was confused by the picture of a driver of a left-hand drive vehicle with one hand on the steering wheel and in the other using a mobile phone.

For the last 71 years I have been under the impression that I live in St Helens, Lancashire, England situated in the United Kingdom.

We have right-hand drive vehicles and using a mobile phone when driving is an offence.

Is it possible that our local authority believes we are St Helens City, the County Town of Columbia County, Oregon, United States of America?

Is this not a very unsuitable picture showing a mobile phone (or is it cell-phone?) being used by a driver?

Perhaps someone from the local authority would care to comment.

I have witnessed a trend over the past year or so which gives rise to the impression that the media in all its branches is determined that the British people shall adopt the phrases, mispronunciations, and general culture of the people of the United States of America.
