IT saddens me to say this, but being in the town centre last Friday (April 7) has decided it for me.

I keep reading reports of “a vibrant and thriving town centre” – really, can someone tell me where it is.

I walked the full length of Baldwin Street, Ormskirk Street and Church Street and included “the market” in this as well. My abiding vision is one of dereliction with empty shop fronts all over, pound shops, and a “market” with a raft of mobile phone accessory shops and second rate clothing.

But where were all the shoppers? This was Friday, not any Friday, but Friday in the first week of the Easter school holidays!

It’s not just the town centre dereliction that shows either, it’s the moral dereliction of a council unable or unwilling to do anything about it.

And as for ideas on what to do, the best they can come up with is to ask us what we think they should do!

Well I’m sorry, but you were elected because you said you had all the answers – so let’s hear them or get out and make room for those who do have them.

Sorry St Helens, I’ve lived here all my life, and it saddens me to see the town in such a state, but successive councils have all put their names on the death warrant of St Helens over the years by a refusal to wake up to what was happening around them in other nearby towns.

Oh, and don’t blame it all on government cuts!

Unless they’ve cut the amount of brains required by local councils.
