TWO us went to play golf at Sherdley.

For a municipal course I have always, along with many others, thought that it rivals many private courses.

So, it was surprising to hear that it could be shut down.

I really don’t know how this place cannot be making enough money. All summer it has people queueing up on the first tee all weekend and every night midweek, etc.

This is part of the problem. I phoned to book at tee time around 1pm which is twilight hours (half price), the guy on the phone said I didn’t need to book as we’d be straight out.

We arrived at 1pm to see lots of people ready to play. I asked the guy working and he said we’d have to wait at least half an hour.

While waiting three other lads said they were told the same things.
How can a golf course expect to make money when the organisation is poor? Also the maintenance is awful.

Anybody can get on the course, dressed in scruffy clothing, not following course rules.

I saw a green repair which looked awful, as though a piece of lawn had been thrown down and stamped on.

An equivalent course would be Walton Hall which had good investment not too long back.

Other new courses welcome retired volunteers to help with the upkeep in return for free golf at quiet times.

The course is great and has so much more potential if changes were made to marshalling, spreading out tee times, more deals for OAPs, groups etc.

After the mix up we didn’t get a full round of golf in. It is hardly a good effort for a repeat visit.
