IN the coming months extensive work will be carried out on the Windle Island project at a cost in the region of £4 million with funding from the Liverpool City Region Growth deal.

Although there appears to be adequate funding in this project allocated for safety purposes there is no mention regarding any new safety measures to be introduced at the junction of Bleak Hill Road and Rainford Road.

It does however indicate quite strongly that the main justification for this huge expenditure is not entirely for safety reasons but to speed up the ever increasing volume of heavy duty vehicles travelling to and from the ever expanding Liverpool super docks.

The main concern for the average motorist is not the crossing through the traffic lights on the East Lancs Road but crossing the dangerous intersection of Bleak Hill Road with Rainford Rd where there are no traffic lights for protection and it is simply a matter of ‘who dares wins’.

I don’t think that members of the committee are fully aware that a large percentage of residents living in close proximity to this dangerous junction are afraid to use it and prefer to find alternative routes when going into St Helens.

This crossover has always been a nightmare but was made considerably worse by the council in its wisdom when it passed the planning application for Starbucks.

The volume of traffic using this dangerous junction will soon be increased considerably by the proposed closure to the exit from the petrol station onto the East Lancs Road, thereby making Rainford Road the only means of exit.
