IT SEEMS that drivers in St Helens just don’t know what their brake pedal is for.

A frequent experience of mine is that I am on a road, keeping to the speed limit when I suddenly become aware of a vehicle coming from a side street on my left like a bat out of hell as if it is not going to stop.

Why do people drive up to junctions without slowing down their speed, leaving them to slam on the brake at the last minute, making me think I am going to get side swiped?

Roundabouts are another source of aggravation.

The worst culprits are the ones who approach at full speed and either don’t bother to look at the traffic coming from the right or do have a quick glance but keep going anyway.

Like all manners and forms of respect, there has been a deterioration of standards and driving in general has suffered as a result of this.
