THE people of St Helens have spoken and a solid majority want out of the EU. The St Helens Green Party thinks this was a huge mistake. We campaigned hard for Remain – not for the establishment, big banks and financiers, but for workers’ rights, women’s rights, the environment, the purchasing power of ordinary people’s pay packets and a more tolerant society.

In the past two years we have seen just how destructive the policies of a Tory government can be.

We firmly believe the pain and anger of those who voted Leave is due to the Conservatives' discredited trickle-down economics and heartless austerity.

We are shocked to see those leading the Leave campaign don't have the slightest idea of what they really want to negotiate with the EU, let alone how to.

All their fine promises are dissolving. They have no idea of how to proceed and don’t appear to have every given the matter any serious thought.

We were also appalled by the lacklustre support given to Remain by Jeremy Corbyn. It is up to his party to decide whether he stays as leader but in our view the way he and his inner circle sabotaged Labour’s efforts to educate supporters about the importance of the EU to workers is problematic at best.

However, the people have spoken, and this is a result we have to live with. We will be working as hard as we can to make sure that we have a “People’s Brexit,” one that will put the needs of ordinary citizens first.

We know for certain that the Tories will not.
