I WAS very sorry to read of the death of my old friend Peter Metcalfe. However, I would like to put the record straight. Peter didn't attend St Austin's. Before the war, the area known as Greenbank was demolished and the families rehoused mainly in Portico.

Peter's family moved to Fir Street, Thatto Heath and of his large family, the children of school age remained at Sacred Heart.

He came out of the army and after we played in a local cup final, he on one side and me on the other, that same evening Saints rolled up and signed him. We had a chat on the corner and he left us in no doubt that that number 6 spot would soon be his.

His big chance came and he and Todder replaced Honey and Lanfield and the debacle of Wembley was transformed into the overwhelming success of Maine Road. His forte was his ability to put his head on one side, kick over his opposite stand-off and catch it!

May you rest in peace Peter.
