IN RESPONSE to 'Residents express anger over Internet speeds (Star, October 15) for phone line-based broadband St Helens has always been one of the last areas to get local exchanges upgraded with latest technology. BT usually explain that their roll out plans are sorted by contracted companies like 'BT Openreach' which they say has nothing to do with BT.

When I lived in Sutton, houses on the main road had Telewest (now Virgin Media) installed. They never did our row or the rows behind.

When I contacted cable at the time they said it was viable to do out rows of houses for cable TV and Internet as the area had a large number of Sky subscribers.

They continued to state that myself and other people in the area could petition for them to have it installed but after the initial cable rollout in St Helens they would no longer get permission from the council to re-dig the roads to run the cable.
