I HAVE just seen that yet another shop in our town centre is set to close.

Burtons has been with us for many years and even though there is another shop on the retail park it is yet another company pulling out of town.

Recently we saw the closure of WH Smiths and it seems that most well known retailers are vacating what is becoming a ghost town. Is it because of the cost of leases? If so would it not be better to drop the price of the lease to give businesses a chance to thrive and make our town centre more attractive?

Opening free car parks at certain times and on Sundays, when some shops are closed, is certainly not the answer as there will soon be no major national retailers left.
