I HEAR and read a lot about the younger generation today lacking manners and showing a lack of respect to older people.

But in my experience, particularly in St Helens town centre, that is a rather sweeping generalisation.

In fact, I’d go far as to say that it is some of the older folk in our communities who need to look at their manners.

It never ceases to amaze me how the free bus pass brigade feel like they have a divine right to space in this town’s shops.

The amount of times I have been barged out of the way while in a store by an older citizen, who should, frankly, know better, has left me in despair.

Alright, it may be accompanied by an ‘excuse me’ – but when those words are spoken in an aggressive or stern voice they don’t count for much, do they?

All I’m asking for is little more politeness and consideration.

After all, isn’t it the job of our older community to set a good example for the younger generation?
