THE multi-million pound Newton Academy has been given the go ahead.
St Aelred’s Catholic Technology College and Newton High School will both be demolished to make way for a £33m joint faith Academy.
The new ‘super school’, due to open in 2011, will house 1,650 pupils aged from 11 to 18 and be built on the Newton High site.
Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, gave the project the go ahead and has already instigated a funding agreement.
