POLICE have revealed the identity of a man who remains critically ill in hospital almost a fortnight after being found unconscious beside a disused railway line.

He is 31-year-old Shaun Peters, who remains in an intensive care unit in a critical but stable condition.

This week police said their investigation has yet to establish whether Shaun's injuries were caused as the result of an attack or a fall.

British Transport Police now say the last confirmed sighting of Shaun, believed to be from Peasley Cross, was leaving a doctors’ surgery on Hall Street, St Helens, at about 6.15pm on Friday, June 6.

The next day (Saturday, June 7) he was reported lying unconscious in bushes at around 4.30pm.

The exact location is next to a disused goods rail line near Warrington New Road, some 300 metres behind Iceland and Matalan stores.

The North West Air Ambulance took him to hospital.

When he was found Shaun was wearing Reebok tracksuit bottoms, a dark blue Ellesse top, a brown and green shirt and Reebok trainers.

Police today released a picture of him for the first time.

Detective Inspector Steve Lewis, the investigating officer, said: “We have made extensive enquiries and reviewed CCTV to try to establish how Shaun ended up unconscious beside the track.

“But we are also asking for help from members of the public and ask anyone who saw Shaun on Friday evening or Saturday to come forward.

“I am treating this incident very seriously am asking anyone with any information that could help our investigation to contact police.”

Earlier this week police suggested he may have been seen with a blood-stained appearance in the hours before he was found.
