THE man who was the driving force behind the creation of the stadium that provided such a wonderful setting for the Pride of St Helens awards, was saluted when Eamonn McManus, the Saints chairman, was named the Excellence in Business Award winner.

Judges expressed admiration for the passion and skill that has gone a long way to securing the rugby league club’s future and delivered a stadium many said would not be possible.

With Eamonn unavailable, Steve Prescott collected the prize on his behalf.

Steve told guests: “Eamonn McManus has been the saviour of St Helens and has played a massive part in the club’s success.

“It took a huge chunk of money to build this stadium and he delivered. He’s a fine businessman and really down to earth as well.

“By allowing us to use Langtree Park as a venue for pride of St Helens, he played a big part in making this happen.”

Steve Leary, editor of the St Helens Star, which sponsored the award, said: “Eamonn is a truly worthy winner of our award. He followed his dream to build Langtree Park.”

Other nominees were Vinyline and the Wellbeing Project
