THREE men have been arrested in connection with the alleged assault of a man and a woman in St Helens town centre this afternoon (Friday, October 12).

Emergency services were called to flats on Hardshaw Street, above Barclays Bank, at about 12.15pm following reports of an attack.

Officers found a 22-year-old man with injuries to his head and a woman with bruising to her face.

An ambulance and three police cars were stationed outside the flats.

A police spokesman said: “Both have been taken to hospital for treatment. At this time their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

“Three men, aged 22, 31 and 32 and all from St Helens, were arrested nearby on suspicion of assault.

“The scene has been cordoned off, house-to-house enquiries are taking place and an investigation into the full circumstances of the incident is underway."

Groups of shoppers stopped at the scene to inquire about what had happened.

One bystander: “There was a man walking up and down the street hurling abuse at anyone who walked by, including old people. He was effing and jeffing at everyone.

“It was horrible really. I don’t know whether it was connected but shortly afterwards lots of police arrived.”

All three men remain in police custody.

This should bring the shoppers flooding back in their droves then..... NOT. The town centre has lost all credibility as far as I and many others are concerned. Any wonder people simply refuse to shop here. I see this latest incident is only yards away from the scene of the incident involving a St Helens player earlier this year.

you could walk down church st anytime of the day and see low lifes wandering the street, from the gang of drunks near the car park at the shaw st end to the ymca crew that congregate near burtons before venturing off to do a bit of shoplifting (look at addresses in the courts) the whole town centre has a seedy feel about it.

i do agree with both posts above..re that on friday, i have been dubious about those flats in that part of the town for a while. And yes, if we can see these characters daily then why cant the police or councillors of this town, OR do they ever read these pages.
