St Helens Citizens Advice Bureau will hold Big Energy Saving Week

BEFORE winter arrives and the dark nights draw in, homeowners are being advised how to cut their fuel bills.

St Helens Citizens Advice Bureau will hold a Big Energy Saving Week event in Asda on Kirkland Street on Tuesday, October 23.

Advisers will be on hand to help people check they are getting the best deal from their energy company and are paying as cheaply as possible.

Thanks to the greed of the major energy suppliers, most of us have all ready cut our energy bills by going cold and sitting in the dark.

You did'nt have to be mystic meg to guess as winter closes in the energy bills would increase by a price rise after these companies are making profits in the billions .

The process of switching is baffling to 95% of the population ,no political party has the b-lls to renationalised these private monopoly's if a poll was taken of the population i am sure people would like just to deal with one company owned by the state with profits going back into the country to benefit us all not just a rich few .

I partly agree with you Chasmcn this is not working is it? But I fear if it was run by the state it would be more expensive and you would have no choice at all if you did not like it. Also politics would get involved and we would have many more green subsidies which would force the price up. But the energy companies are a law unto themselves and the government should get a grip. But the underlying problem is we are having to import too much energy because the labour government built windmills instead of new power stations.

I'm sure I read a report last week saying that the German government stops the hyenas, sorry energy companies, raising their prices more than the rate of inflation. Not much chance of our government doing that, whichever party is in power. Also, I must agree with you Sankey about the labour government building windmills instead of power stations. This is idealogical foolishness. Solar,wind,and tidal energy will never be able to supply more than a tiny percentage of our energy needs. They're just pandering to the tree huggers. We would be back in the stone age in no time. I am a labour voter, but I'm also a realist, and I won't go along with something just for the sake of party politics. A national government, made up of politicians who work for the national good instead of their own narrow interests, would seem to me to be the best thing, but where would you ever find such rare creatures? Beats me.

The system needs a massive shake up. Centrica and other energy companies are making massive profits irrespective of the wholesale energy prices.
Changing companies if fine but there that many different tariffs is so confusing for the majority of people to know what really is the best deal. No sooner have you changed then the prices change and your stuck with the deal you are on. Its no wonder people feel as though its one big con trick. Think of all the money that would be going back into the countries coffers if privatisation had not occurred.

I have just fixed mine today with EDF to 2014. Whether its the right deal god knows. But its easy to switch though isn't it quick search and then 2 min phone call or online. As for it being confusing its no more than any consumer product you buy a cheap shirt then see a better deal next week. Even with all its flaws I prefer it to one product from the state and don't assume it would be cheaper with armies of civil servants providing that one product because it won't. The basic problem is we are importing too much energy and the supplliers have us over a barrel.

over the past decade i have switched twice, but not again..WHY ? Because eventually they all more or less level out so you are no better off..The government/s need to bring down the iron fist, and force these suppliers to stay static once an accepted level of profit is reached.

I may be wrong about this as its back in the dark ages when we where all turned in to mini capitalists but iam sure that one of the reasons for privatisation was that the energy companies would build new power stations out of their profits if that is the case were are they ? as iam sure thats how it was sold to the nation in the grand sale .

Sankey if the govt controls the price the people can have a say you have the vote we are all shareholders then .You can bet thou the tax payer will build new gas/nuclear power stations and just hand then over to energy companies like last time .

May be its time we started digging again in St Helens and Newton lots of energy under our feet .

Yesterday the prime minister made a statement with regards to energy tariffs that simply cant be delivered unless the energy utilities are nationalised. Privatisation was supposed to create better competition for the consumer, its utterly failed.
