LAST week in the Star we carried the story of miracle baby Sophia, who amazed doctors with her remarkable recovery after being born three months prematurely.
Now her grateful mum has penned a poem in praise of the hospital team who fought to save the life of her little one.
Natalie Ford said she feared the worst, when doctors told her that there was a problem with Sophia and she would have to be delivered 12 weeks early.
The 30-year-old from Sutton told the Star: “Following a routine scan, they discovered something wrong with the placenta, which meant she was effectively starving to death.
“When they sat me down and told me, I screamed out. It was awful; the worst thing ever. I was convinced she wasn’t going to survive.
“They told me not to expect to hear her cry when she was born, because she was too little. But they said if she survived after 72 hours, she had a good chance”
Natalie underwent an emergency C section. She added: “Sophia was only 1lb 4oz and they were looking at around 2lb.
“But she has done amazingly and came home three weeks before her due date. Now she’s 4lb 5oz and that’s a good reflection of the care they gave her at the Whiston SCBU unit.”
Natalie was so touched by the care Sophia received that she penned a short poem, which will be placed in the waiting room of the unit. She said: “I just want to give parents a bit of comfort.”

At Whiston Hospital,
On the ward they call SCBU,
Are a host of Angels,
In lilac and blue.
They care for our babies,
Born too early or ill.
They nurture them on
With the greatest of skill.
They help them to grow,
From their inky or cot.
Giving the very best care,
To each special tot.
These Angels are amazing,
With a smile on their face.
They make the ward SCBU
A friendlier place.
So try to stay positive,
If your babe’s on SCBU.
Coz they’re safe with the Angels
In lilac and blue.
