Parents charity makes appeal over nearly new sale
9:43am Tuesday 9th October 2012 in News
A PARENTS charity is urging more sellers to come forward to help bolster supplies for a nearly new sale of baby clothing, toys and maternity goods.
The St Helens branch of the NCT parent support charity holds sales twice per year.
However, the events can only be successful if parents come forward to offload goods they no longer need.
Ahead of an event that is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 13, volunteers expressed fears competition from new commercial baby sales may force the charity to end the service for local parents.
Sarah Underhill, branch nearly new sale co-ordinator, NCT Wigan & St Helens Branch, says: “These sales are the main fundraiser for the local branch of the charity.
“Proceeds help to provide face-to-face support to parents in Wigan and St Helens, as well as funding national helplines, breastfeeding counselling, training antenatal and postnatal teachers and many more services.
“Without these sales, the local branch may not be able to provide this valuable support to parents.”
Organisers believe the sales provide a valuable service to cash strapped parents.
Sellers can get rid of baby and children’s items they no longer need, ensuring they go to a good home and make some cash at the same time.
They keep 70 per cent of the proceeds while the rest is returned to fund NCT’s work.
Unlike commercial table top baby sales there are no upfront charges for offloading clothes and equipment and sellers do not have to give up a day of their time to attend the sale.
Parents can price up their goods, drop them off in the morning and collect unsold items at the end of the day.
NCT volunteers will do all the rest and send each seller a cheque shortly after the sale.
