Disappointment for Saints fans as season ends with semi-final defeat

Warrington's Ryan Atkins reaches for the ball. Warrington's Ryan Atkins reaches for the ball.

SAINTS supporters are coming to terms with the disappointment of witnessing their side suffer defeat in the play off semi-final at Langtree Park.

The 18-36 loss to Warrington ends Saints run of reaching the Super League Grand Final for the past six seasons.

Hopes were high at half time as the home side led 14-12 after being the dominant side.

However, the momentum shifted shortly after half time as Tony Smith’s side took control of the contest with four tries.

It is a disappointing end for coach Mike Rush who, working with assistant Keiron Cunningham, had done superbly to turn the club’s season around after the dismal form earlier in the year that led to the departure of Royce Simmons.

Rush will return to his role as general manager when Nathan Brown arrives during the off season to take the coaching reins.

Afterwards several of the Saints players turned to Twitter to thank the supporters for their backing over the season and share their disappointment.

Winger Tommy Makinson, whose acrobatic finish for the game’s opening try was outstanding, tweeted: “Not much to say after that result, just gutted. Thank you to all the fans who have been amazing all year. See you next year.”

Good effort from the lads to get so close to another Grand Final. Had a chance last night until we gave that try away(from an attacking position) just on half-time,we could have gone in 8pts up.
Warrington deserved the win in the end but got big help from the Ref.The amount of 'lying on' at every tackle and encroachment when Saints played the ball but low and behold he gives them a penalty when we had them under pressure near their own line(and only 4pts behind) ,to relieve pressure and they go down the field and score. Also the try when Monaghan dropped the ball and picked it up again to score and change the match.99 times out of 100 that would have been a knock-on.
As the night before with some of the decisions given against Leeds in Wigan's favour ,I feel that the RL did not want a Saints and Leeds GF again, the problem was Wigan cocked their chances up!
After the start we had to the season we did well to finish were we did in the League and be 40 minutes away from another GF but we are still short of some class players and someone with 'Guile' to get us over the line from great positions that we get in. We also need a kicker ,which is another point, why did the management 'Dump' Jamie Foster, who is one of the best kickers in the game? The way that lad and also Lee Gaskill have been treated this season is a disgrace!
Got that off my mind! I am sure we will be back next Year and with our new Stadium and Revenue Streams and Manager,we will move forward.
Good luck to Warrington in the Grand Final! COYS!

Just watched the NRL Grand Final. Can't believe how much quicker the 'play of the ball' is in OZ!
Warrington had 3 men lying on and turning our players at every 'play of the ball' last night, without a single penalty!
What's all this about the player on the ground being turned completely around by the tacklers?
Heard the Aussie ref saying "it's a penalty because you have gone to sleep on top of the player" and the Bulldog's player was only on his man for seconds!

do we have refs ?

Our Game is going 'down the pan' because the standard of refereeing! The NRL have 2 Referees in every match,we can't find 2 descent ones in the whole of Super League!

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter! It was only a game of rugby and the town has bigger concerns right now than the achievements (or lack of in this case) of one of it's sports teams.

Reads to me that the dr is one of the disappointed brainwashed, I wonder if he is one of the grown men that were shown on TV crying floods of tears because the team he/she supports were beaten, no need to cry it was only a game but a better one for The Wolves.

I read it because I read most of the articles on here, hometown news is of interest to me. I was moved to comment after the rhetoric used by some commentators who seem to be of the opinion that St Helens Rugby League club is everything in life and of paramount importance. I suppose to some it is, but I'm glad I'm not one of them, I seem to be in a better mood. The point I was trying to illustrate is that the earth is still spinning, life is continuing and there are other problems to face. Some of which make getting upset about the result of a sports match seem a little bit silly.

I think some of the Saints fans should have gone to Specsavers as they see a different game to what the result shows.

Got to agree with butscratcher. It is a poor Saints side which this season was poorly coached, inspite of what the Star and Rush himself likes to think. McManus did a good job in boring us all rigid on the way to being booted out of the Challenge Cup at quarter final stage for the first time in 12 years and of the playoffs in the semis for the first time in 7 years. And we played so badly that not even Robes could get himself into the national side (first time a Saints player hasn't been in the national side in over 20 years). I hope McManus is happy.

Interesting to note that no comments have been allowed on the most recent mouthpiece by Saints via the Star, that so-called review of the season. I think whoever wrote it should go and ask the fans who attended all season what they thought of the 'exciting brand of rugby' claimed to have been displayed at Langtree Park this season! Most fans were snoring by halfway through. An awful lot of fans are very glad to see the back of Mike Rush and not just because of the brand of rugby he had the team play. We would very much like to see our young players back in the side and those young players who did play kick on because they all went backwards under Rush. Bring on Mr Brown. Let's hope he can get Saints playing an entertaining form of rugby again and let's hope he actually believes in playing the local talent.
