Flooding upate: Waters still rising as road closures remain in St Helens

WITH water levels still rising at three flooding blackspots, highways chiefs have issued an updated list of road closures.

A month’s worth of rain poured down on Monday, making it the worst September rainfall in 30 years.

Locations across St Helens have faced chaos and the downpours continued yesterday.

Flood waters have relented in some areas and there has been respite from the rain since this morning, however, the situation is being closed monitored by St Helens Council, the Highways Agency and emergency services.

• College Street remains shut and water levels are still rising.
• Islands Brow and Merton Bank Road are also still closed as water levels are rising here.
• Traffic at Blackbrook Road and West End Road, in St Helens, is now running smoothly and water levels are contained.
• Peasley Cross Lane was opened up after the peak rush hour this morning but is being monitored throughout the day.
• Burrows Lane, Eccleston is still closed and the water level is still high though cars can use an adjacent service road.
• Watery Lane, Sutton is now passable but there is still a lot of water coming off adjacent land and this is also being kept under review.
• Smock Lane re-opened yesterday.
