THERE had been whispers he had been a bit stirred up when Saints announced a shirt sponsorship deal with Typhoo last year.

So when Johnny Vegas strolled out to the second half of a comedy gig at the Theatre Royal wearing a red-vee jersey with PG Tips plastered over the name of the rival brand you knew ‘Tea Wars’ was on the way.

The comedian and actor, who advertises PG Tips, took out his feelings of ‘rejection’ by making Jon Wilkin, whose testimonial the stand-up show was supporting, the centre of his mockery.

Thatto Heath’s Vegas, who for the last decade has been seen pictured in a variety of Saints shirts and caps, but appearances in this year’s shirt, which bears the Typhoo brand, have been absent.

He joked: “Everyone knows you say ahhh and not ooo after having a brew.”

He added: “I bet they thought we’ll sign this and then fatty and that monkey can’t come to games.

“You’ve left me touring charity shops in the town looking for a shirt with an old sponsor on it.”

To howls of laughter, he then picked apart a press release from Wilkin, in which the Saints player was quoted extensively supporting the deal.

At one point the ex-Benidorm star ripped open a box a PG Tips before showering the front rows of the audience with tea bags.
