FIREFIGHTERS removed the roof of a car to free a 22-year-old man with suspected spinal injuries after a crash tonight.

The smash happened on Blackbrook Road at about 4.45pm.

Crews, assisted by paramedics, lifted the man on a spinal board from the vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to Whiston Hospital.

There were conflicting reports of how many vehicles were involved in the collision.

Mersey Fire and Rescue Service said two cars were involved – however, police had said it involved a red Toyota kit car, a blue Toyota Avensis, a silver Peugeot 206 and a silver Peugeot 407.
