Drivers fined after major crackdown on St Helens roads

FINES totalling £1,200 were dished out after reckless drivers were caught during a crackdown on unlicensed, untaxed and unroadworthy vehicles.

Nearly half of the 50 vehicles pulled over at Burtonhead Road are to face further action.

One driver was arrested for allegedly driving while disqualified, while another was found to be using red diesel – the heating and agricultural fuel that is not subject to tax.

One of the vehicles was subsequently seized by officers.

A total of eight people were found not to be wearing seatbelts while others were fined for having bald tyres.

The joint operation in St Helens - involved customs officers, police and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) – Councillor Richard McCauley said: “The operation was a tremendous success – stopping several people in their tracks who should not have been on the road in the first place “It sends a clear message to those who flout the law that at some stage they will be caught and dealt with by the legal system.”

A similar crackdown is already being planned for the coming months.

Let us hope their next crackdown is on the pavement cyclists, and not before time if they do.

Its just more evidence of the only reason the police exist look for ways to get money from the motorist, I am not in anyway saying people without TAX insurance MOT and badly maintained vehicles should not be took to task, but we all know now MOT Tax Insurance all are on computer now so can be fined from a distance by the relevany agency, but we see police hiding behind trees and around bends with cameras in unmarked BMW's just waiting to nab the motorist, they even have there own lowered kirbs so they can get off the road and hide, they should be called Traffic Officers not police.

and yes the Cyclist cuts in and out of traffic goes through red lights or mounts the kirb to avoid traffic and traffic lights.

Good on them I say, about time. We were hit by an uninsured motorist, it was a nightmare.
