AN investigation has been launched into a fire, which broke out in an unoccupied industrial site, sending plumes of grey smoke across parts of the town.

Following a number of calls from members of the public, firefighters attended the scene at Ravenhead Road at around 4.36pm yesterday (Sunday, September 2).

A pile of rubbish, including wood, tyres and paper, was alight and was in danger of spreading to a nearby business unit.

Fire crews from St Helens, Eccleston, Whiston and Huyton used hoses and ground monitors, which spray water onto fires automatically.

They managed to stop the fire entering the building, but it did cause external damage. After around two-hours, the incident was scaled down.

Firefighters also contacted St Helens Council to inform them about fly tipped waste at the site, although that hadn’t been involved in the blaze.
