Woman rescued from muddy brook in Newton-le-Willows
10:48pm Thursday 30th August 2012 in News By St Helens Star newsdesk
A WOMAN was rescued by firefighters after becoming trapped waist-deep in a muddy brook.
The 59-year-old got stuck in the brook behind a cemetery on Park Road South, Newton-le-Willows, shortly before 9.30am today.
It is believed she may have got in the water to retrieve her dog and got stuck.
One of the firefighters, wearing water rescue equipment, got into the brook to rescue the woman while another pulled her on to the bank.
The woman was given a precautionary check by paramedics and taken to Warrington Hospital.
Firefighters were at the scene within minutes and were there for around half an hour.
Watch Manager Jason Hannah, who is based at St Helens Community Fire Station, said: "The lady’s right leg was stuck in mud and she was unable to release herself.
"A firefighter was wearing water rescue equipment released her leg and pushed her out of the water. Another firefighter, who was on the bank and was wearing in water rescue equipment, assisted and pulled her.
"I would urge people to be cautious around water courses in the county."
