Eccleston Social Club faces axe

A LONG standing social club will be axed later this year, Pilkington Ltd confirmed today.

The Eccleston Social Club, on Knowsley Road, more commonly known as Triplex, has been a popular venue down the decades, hosting countless wedding and birthday parties.

It is owned by Ruskin Leisure Ltd, a subsidiary of the glassmaker, and the closure will cut another of the few remaining recreational ties that the company still held in the town.

It is believed employees were informed of the decision today, however, it is not clear at this stage how many jobs will be affected.

A statement read: “Ruskin Leisure Ltd regrets to announce its intention to close the Eccleston Social Club due to the terms of the sale of the land.

“The last day of business operation is planned to be Friday, November 16. “Discussions on the closure plans have now commenced with affected employees.

“All club members will receive written communication regarding the closure in the next few days.”

Oh what a surprise! Yet more housing that we really dont need. All that happens is that these new "expensive" "luxury" homes get sold to housing associations and then handed over to social security claimants for the extremely high rents. There are plenty of areas in St Helens that need renewal instead of just cramming new houses into every available corner

Yes it is a shame that another watering hole is closing. This would have happened to Greenalls Club as well, but some years ago, the members agreed to purchase the club from Greenalls.

Anyone from "Triplex Club" is welcome to come down the road to Greenalls and try us out. If you like it, membership is available.

the same fate would've fallen on the Percival Room down at Ruskin if it hadn't been bought.

most social clubs are losing money and it is a shame, but the younger ones dont want them now..Same with bowling greens, another dying sport that i used to play..greens have gone, from gas and electric, penlake sutton, railway thatto heath along with the pub, gerard ,black bull, clock face hotel, black horse rainhill, one at ruskin drive, plus others i cant think of at the moment..10 years about, they all had teams and greens.

I dont understand the comment "due to the terms of the sale of the land" as in the original planning proposal they intended to retain the social club and even set aside land for a health care centre. The proposed closure should be questioned as I believe this is more a business decision to sell to create more housing.

john barnes 10,you are correct, the land is worth a lot more than having a club on it ever could be,the land is an asset and has been liquidised, plans get altered and was it a condition that a health centre was built as part of the original building proposal? if not then sorry, same as the flats in parr, they got started and 3/4 finished then sold to another builder now have had the plans changed to use them as a sheltered complex as this will bring in more income it is just a business decision, would you sell your house for what you paid for it when you first bought it?

Went past this evening and it was closed, so looks like the writing is on the wall already. Tried to find some altered plans for the site but couldnt find anything which mentions the social club. Guess the plans are to follow.

Don't worry the Fire Station is opposite! That is until it is also closed and knocked down for housing!

Social clubs & pubs belong to previous generations. We have to recognise movements, progress, evolution. Town centre "bars" to move between are the current requirement & therefore outlying social clubs & any pubs are no longer attractive. Committees beware! Your premises have to compete with such town centre bars and non charity shops My generation are now content to buy cheaply at supermarkets, not drink drive and happy to enjoy with Sky tv in comfort at home.

This appear to be a very convenient side step by both Ruskin Leisure and Jones the Builder. Jones buys the old Triplex Site, and then obtains planning permission with a provisor that it will retain and indeed refurbish the Social Club, but the Social Club is not yet owned by Jones. Ruskin Leisure are under no obligation regarding the club and therefore there is no come back when they decide to close the Club. Once closed, they can then sell the land to Jones, who can then argue the case that the closure of the club was out of their hands and they have not breached the conditions of the planning permission, and so are compliant.

Social Clubs can still have a place,i could name a few.The present generation dont use them, for one main reason, social club rules. The present generation cant behave, some not all,and they wouldnt be allowed in. They just want to get stoned out of their minds, spew up or fight on the streets, and listen to head banging music.
