FIREFIGHTERS are damping down at the scene of a large fire, which damaged a derelict pub.

They were called to the Saracen’s Head on Kentmere Avenue, Clinkham Wood at around 3.10pm.

Elaine Gauld, who lives close by said: “Police came around and told everyone to stay indoors and close the windows because of the smoke.

“The pensioners’ bungalows were worse, because you couldn’t see the top of the road. The buses and cars had to be turned back.”

A spokesperson from Merseyside Fire and rescue said the building was well alight by the time three crews from St Helens and Eccleston arrived at the scene.

The police said that the fire seemed to be strongest at the rear of the building. Officers erected a cordon around the old pub.

Detectives have visited the scene to carry out house-to-house enquiries, but the exact cause is as of yet unknown.

The number of derilect pubs on fire makes one wonder who or what is behind them. It appears to be a cheap way of demolition without permission. Thatto Heath, Clinkham Wood, where next?
The term "pub Watch" takes on a whole new meaning?

my thoughts BILL get the local scum bag to torch the place and the authorities to pull it down, then claim it as an eyesore and fast track the plans you have had done months ago through planning then sell at a greater profit with out lifting a finger, sounds like a lucrative business plan!

I would suggest that residents near to closed pubs, keep their eyes open and/or cctv cameras, if in the areas, be redirected. As I wrote the concept of "Pub Watch" has taken on a whole new meaning.
