Will boxer Martin Murray be a contender for Hattons Gold Sportsperson of the Year?
THE rich vein of sporting talent that runs through St Helens will be celebrated at the inaugural Solar King Pride of St Helens Awards.
And Star Sport is urging our readers to get the nominations rolling in
Organisers the Steve Prescott Foundation has created two awards which will highlight the outstanding success stories of local sports people.
The categories are the Hattons Gold Sportsperson of the Year and St Helens Council Young Sportsperson of the Year.
However, sporting nominations are also welcome for the flagship Pride of St Helens prize - which will celebrate an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the town - and Mentor of the Year, a category recognising an inspiring teacher or coach.
Both Prescott, a former Wembley hero with Saints, and the Star are keen to see entries pile in before the September 6 closing date, to underline the strength and diversity of the local sporting scene.
Langtree Park will host the glittering awards night on Friday, October 12. Steve said: “We want to know whose achievements in the sporting arena have shone the brightest over the past year.
“We want nominations from all sporting fields - from amateurs to professionals, and from coaches to players
“For the second award we want to know which young sportsperson has recorded the biggest achievement. In a town with so much talent we would expect a deluge of entries.”
Category sponsors Hattons said: “Hattons Solicitors has always been proud of its roots in St Helens and these awards seemed a perfect opportunity to celebrate all that is good within the town.
“We are so pleased with the standard of nominations so far for the Hattons Gold Membership Sportsperson of the Year Award but it is vital that the nominations keep on coming so we can give credit to those who really do deserve this prestigious accolade.”
The Star is partners in the event, which has 11 categories in total that aim to champion the very best of the town.
