Tour de France and Olympic time trial champion Bradley Wiggins will compete in cycling's Tour of Britain, which will ride through St Helens next month.

The London 2012 hero will be among cyclists will enter the borough in Garswood on the afternoon of Monday, September 10.

They will travel from Billinge Road to Newton Road into Billinge and head down Main Street then onto Rainford Road towards Crank.

The route heads to Higher Lane Rainford and onto Ormskirk Road and the Rainford By Pass before leaving the borough for Knowsley Safari Park.

Wiggins has been given extra time off by Team Sky following his hugely successful summer and is not participating in the Tour of Denmark next week.

His return to competitive action is now set to come on home soil in the eight-stage Tour of Britain event, which begins in Ipswich on September 9.

Wiggins made the announcement as he launched the inaugural 'Ride with Brad' mass participation public cycling event in Barnoldswick, Lancashire.

When asked what his next plans were, Wiggins said: "I'm doing the Tour of Britain now.

"It'll be nice. I'll try to stay fit between now and then so I don't embarrass myself! It'll be good."

St Helens Council has informed schools along the route of the timing of the race and pupils may line the streets to cheer them.

And once again, the roads of St Helens will be closed off to tax paying motorists and business's will be penalised, though no doubt the Council will be issuing their usual statement about how this will bring money to the town and fill it with tourists and shoppers, will be issued later next week.

If they gave out Gold Medals for moaning you would have loads! I am a 'Tax Paying motorist' and I am really looking forward to seeing a Olympic Champion and winner of the Tour de France going through my village.
Remember watching the 'Tour of Britain' coming through Garswood in the past and it is an amazing sight! There is a convoy of advertising vehicles of all shapes and sizes that go through ahead of the cyclists and it is a real experience to see the 'Peleton'.
By the way it does not actually travel through St Helens Town Centre,so stop moaning and enjoy a great event travelling through our Borough!

i think you'll find that many cyclists also own cars and pay tax! certainly true for the majority of those who race or ride professionally!

Little point on paying endless tax for the privilege of being able to use a motorised vehicle on our roads when it's one road closure after another and when it's not for urgent repairs but merely to entertain some enthusiast of a minority sport.

Is it actually affecting you? God,weren't London lucky that you never lived there. You would have had the Olympics stopped!
The Stage starts in Nottingham on that day and ends at the Safari Park and 1000's will line the route and it is an honour for it to come through our Town!
Lighten Up!

At least these cyclists ride on the road and not the pavement, could show a shining example to most of the St Helens cyclists who think riding on the pavement is the norm.

As long as they're riding single file then all will be fine.
Since Wiggo won the wycling wace the number of cycling swarms clogging up the roads at the weekends has become mad as a box of frogs.
I live on the route mentioned above. I'll be there cheering on the cyclists. Actually I won't. I'll be in work.

The number of road closures we've had in this town for ' special events " has been ridiculous this year. I'll bet we see major roads closed for up to 4 hours before this pointless event, reopening no earlier than 2 hours after , once the Health and Safety, Police and council planners have sat round the tea and biscuits.

Fantastic to see the Tour of Britain coming through St Helens.
Great cyclist as he is though, the Olympics is now over and Bradley is a Wigan supporter. I'm not supporting someone who supports the Pie eaters.

Great news. I watched the last Milk Race over Billinge Hill down to Kings Moss and the humped backed bridge. All over in a few seconds as they flash by. The French have no moans about road closures they treat it as a time to party. I just love looking at the French Countryside in the Tour de France.
