Ex-council leader Brian Spencer will face 'election night' assault trial

THE former leader of St Helens Council, Brian Spencer will stand trial for allegedly assaulting two people at the local election count in May.

Appearing back before magistrates at Bootle on Monday (August 13), Spencer, 65, who denies the allegations, was granted unconditional bail.

The 65-year-old from Sutton is accused of assaulting Labour’s candidate for Eccleston, Mark Johnson and his mother Janet, who is a serving councillor, in St Helens Town Hall just after midnight on Friday, May 4.

He will stand trial at Bootle on Monday, October 29.
