Terrier is savaged

Jasper suffered horric bite wounds Jasper suffered horric bite wounds

A TERRIFIED pensioner was at the mercy of a powerful Japanese Akita dog as it attacked her pet, leaving it with horrific bite wounds.

Rita Gavin, 75, was taking a morning stroll with her eight-year-old terrier Jasper along Ellamsbridge Road in Sutton, when the huge dog appeared from nowhere.

She said: “It was terrible. It wouldn’t let go of him. It grabbed the back end of Jasper and he was covered in blood.

“The next thing a lad came running over from near the garage and started punching and kicking the dog.

“Then he grabbed it by the scruff of his neck, because it didn’t have a collar on and walked away.

“It happened just outside the Little Pig Pub and the landlord came out to see if I was OK. I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

“I didn’t even see the lad properly because I was too terrified. Jasper had two operations and was all stitched up at the back.”

The attack happened at around 11.30am on Wednesday, August 1.

Rita, who lives on her own, took him to the animal charity PDSA. who paid the £406 for his treatment.

She said: “I just want people to be aware. I see a lot of dogs running loose around Sutton, and people don’t seem to care.”

No no , prouty - blame the deed not the breed, any dog regardless of size is controllable , it's the actions of the sub humans that cause the problem. I know an Akita and it's a nice dog , all breeds have difference's in them - just like people.

YES YES Certain types of dogs are always in the news, do you ever hear of a Shi tzu or a spaniel or a Labrador attacking a person or another dog NO NO NO its always you pit bulls staffs and Akita, I agree part way with you, but if its in a dogs nature then there is danger

The news is the problem mate - not the breed. Take a look at this.

Blame the owner , not the breed.

The owner is to blame, not the dog. If the dog is reared properly they are generally not a danger. whereas a lot of these types of dogs are only bought as protection for their criminal owners. And yes the police and dog warden have done absolutely nothing despite knowing who is responsible.

Pitbullboxing is right. I think it's more likely that those breeds of dogs attract certain irresponsible owners rather than anything else. And border collies, labs and even shih-tzus are not as innocent as you think (particularly the first two- you may want to do some research before readjusting those dog's halos.

Ill informed people, and the media campaign against certain dog breeds only propagate the belief that big dogs are somehow inherently evil. As with most information gained via the national rags it's worth forming your own opinion rather than adding fuel to an already misguided fire.

have you tried to use these links they go nowhere??

Working ok for me - are you copying them into the address bar rather than the search engine? If not I found them simply by google - just type "Labrador attack" or whatever.

Anyway even a dangerous dog be it whatever breed is controllable and trainable with the correct measures.

I clicked onto these comments expecting the usual 'devil dogs' 'these breeds are dangerous' blah blah blah remarks, how refreshing to see that the media hype is finally being dispelled by the majority .... :)

Watching the BBC news this morning the experts don't agree with the comments on here, they say certain dogs have certain traits. And you should realise the dog has these traits when you get it.

either way there is no excuse to allow your dog off a lead in a public place full stop. then it wont matter if its a dangerous type.

That's because they are not experts. I think having your dog on a lead all the time would be one of the safety measures people on here are talking about.
