SAINTS ace Lance Hohaia joined Mayor of St Helens, Councillor Geoff Almond, to celebrate the ‘kick off’ of more new homes in St Helens.

Barratt Homes had invited the mayor and Lance to join pupils from Eaves Primary School for the launch of Delph Wood in Sutton.

The youngsters had taken part in a competition to design a series of pictures, which are on permanent display in the sales office.

Young players from Blackbrook Rugby Club also attended, and were delighted to meet Lance, who said: “It is great to see such a large turnout. Barratt has done a great job of involving the community in the work it’s doing here, which is evident when you see how many people have come along.”

Cllr Almond, who cut the ribbon to formally open the development, said: “The area needed an injection of new housing stock, and Barratt’s development at Delph Wood greatly improves opportunities for St Helens residents to own their own quality homes.”

The development on Ridgewood Drive features a range of two, three and four bedroom homes throughout, all created, says Barratt, with homebuyers in mind, using extensive market research and customer feedback to ensure the best shapes, sizes and features are included in every home.

are these houses meant for the first time buyer or are they some more over priced shoe boxes, what this town needs are low cost £70-£90k houses for low income families, good quality starter homes,NOT more £200k+ cardboard estates.

The 3 bedroom ones for sale start at£136,995 to £160,995. There are some 2 bed ones to be built on this site but far less in number. The 4 bed ones to be built will be more than likely in the £170,000 plus bracket.
What I'm more interested to know Papyt is what price St Helens Council sold the land to Barratt for and when did the deal go through for the sale?
It was rumoured back in 2002 that Barratt had bought the site then before the community centre that once stood there was closed and demolished. Will the Sutton area ever see any of this money directly invested back into the area in improving community facilities and services etc, particularly as the last remaining community facility for Sutton once stood on this site. After all, don't the families and parents moving into the new houses need somewhere for the kids to go whatever the weather and considering there was such a good response and input from the children at Blackbrook Rugby Club and Eaves Primary school? As there are several primary schools in the Sutton area maybe St Helens Council could invest some money in building a new community facility or even a public library especially with Sutton being one of the few areas of the town to not have one. After all, there used to be two public libraries in Sutton, including one that was on the site of this new housing development until they were both bulldozed.

so if you took an average price of say £150,000 for a property that is still to expensive for many first time buyers and lets be honest that price is based on the area the houses are in,the same house in a more affluent part of st helens costing the same to build would cost nearly double to buy,it is all down to the builders making vast profits NOT giving people affordable housing.
